Download speed of fixed internet connection in enterprises

  • 6 out of 10 enterprises have download speed of at least 30 Mbit/s

    In 60% of the enterprises with at least 10 employees in Flanders, the maximum download speed of the fastest fixed internet connection was at least 30 megabits per second (Mbit/s) in 2019. For 35% of these enterprises this was at least 100 Mbit/s.

    In 2014 these percentages stood at respectively 46% (30Mbit/s) and 19% (100Mbit/s).

  • Only the fastest internet connections of at least 100 Mbit/s are increasing annually

    The proportion of enterprises with at least 10 employees in which the maximum download speed of the fastest fixed internet connection is at least 100 Mbit/s, has increased from 19% in 2014 to 35% in 2019. For connections less than 2Mbit/s there has been a status quo since 2014. Internet connections of 2 to 30 Mbit/s have become less popular since 2014. Since 2017, this decrease has also been noted for internet connections of 30 to 100 Mbit/s.

  • Proportion of enterprises with fast internet connection increases with company size

    The proportion of enterprises with a high speed internet connection increases with the company size. While in 2019 43% of enterprises with 2 to 9 employees had an internet connection with a maximum download speed of at least 30 Mbit/s; this percentage reached 85% in the enterprises with at least 250 employees. For an internet connection with a maximum download speed of at least 100Mbit/s, these percentages stood at 24% and 57% respectively.

  • Flemish enterprises perform better than EU average with regards to internet connection speed

    The proportion of enterprises that have an internet connection with a maximum download speed of at least 30 Mbit/s is higher in the Brussels-Capital Region (67%) than in the Flemish Region (60%) and in the Walloon Region (59%).

    In 2019, Belgium ranked 10th - with 60% - for the share of enterprises that have an internet connection with a maximum download speed of at least 30 Mbit/s. Among the top performers, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, this percentage lies between 75% and 87%.

    As for the share of enterprises with an internet connection with a maximum download speed of at least 100 Mbit/s, Belgium occupies the 9th place with 31%. In Denmark and Sweden this share stands at 62% and 59% respectively. In the Flemish Region it reaches 35%.

Definitions

Megabit per second (Mbit/s): the download speed is the speed with which a PC or smartphone can retrieve data from a computer network. This speed is expressed in megabit per second (Mbit/s).
