Incorporation of enterprises

  • Nearly 58,000 enterprise incorporations in 2018

In 2018, there were 57,903 incorporations  of VAT-registered enterprises in the Flemish Region. In 2008, this figure stood at 38,720. The biggest increases occurred in 2014 and 2016.

  • More incorporations in the Flemish Region than in the other regions

In 2018 there were more than 23,000 incorporations in the Walloon Region and just over 12,000 in the Brussels-Capital Region. The total number of incorporations in the Flemish Region (57,903) thus exceeded the combined number of incorporations in the other regions in that year.

  • 2 out of 3 enterprises still active after 5 years

In 2017, the survival rate of enterprises 5 years after their incorporation stood at 66% in the Flemish Region. That means that 66% of the enterprises that were incorporated five years earlier were still active.

This figure has remained fairly stable throughout the 2013-2017 period, with 65% (in 2014) and 67% (in 2016) being the minimum and maximum rates respectively.

The other regions performed worse in 2017 with a survival rate of 60% in both the Brussels-Capital Region and the Walloon Region.

Definitions

Incorporations: the incorporations include the entities having VAT liable status on 31 December of the year under observation, but not on 31 December of the year before.

Survival rate at 5 years: the ratio between the number of companies surviving 5 years after incorporation and the initial starters. Starters refer to companies that are active on 31 December of the year in which they start (only new starters, not restarters). The number of these first starters is next compared with the number of companies that are and remain active on 31 December of the 5 subsequent years.
