Railways - tonne-kilometres

Definitions

Tonne-kilometre: is a unit of measurement that combines weight and distance. For example, transporting 2 tonnes (of goods in weight) across a 2-kilometre distance represents 4 tonne-kilometres.

Remarks on quality

The number of tonne-kilometres were recorded, calculated and supplied by the NMBS until 2007. With the liberalization of the market for the transport of goods by rail, the NMBS lost its monopoly, with other freight carriers operating on the Belgian railway network. Since then, the NMBS has ceased publishing its own transport results.

Since 2007, an estimate is made of the number of tonne-kilometres in the Flemish Region, based on the Belgian figures obtained via Eurostat. The Eurostat figures not only include the data from the NMBS, but also those of the other goods carriers operating on the market of the transport of goods by rail in Belgium.
The Flemish share within Belgium is estimated based on the trend seen over the 1991-2006 time frame (a small annual rise of the Flemish share within Belgium).
