Definitions

The European Directive 2009/28/EC on the promotion of the use of energy from renewable sources was approved in 2009. This directive lays down binding objectives for the European member states’ share of renewable energy sources in their gross final consumption. The gross final consumption of energy from renewable sources in each member state is calculated as the sum of:

- the gross final consumption of electricity from renewable energy sources;

- the gross final consumption of energy from renewable sources for heating and cooling;

- the final consumption of energy from renewable sources in transportation.
